Family sponsorship

Family sponsorship

The Canadian government understands the importance of unifying families, and has thus devised the Family Sponsorship pathway. If you are at least 18 years old and a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act, you can sponsor your:

  • Spouse, partner or dependent children
  • Parents and grandparents
  • Other relatives
  • Adopted child

In order to sponsor a spouse, partner or dependent children, you do not need to meet the minimum necessary income (MNI) requirements. However, in order to sponsor parents, grandparents or relatives, you need to sign a 20-year undertaking while also adhering to the MNI bracket. The Family Sponsorship program allows the sponsored person to enjoy all benefits of a permanent resident, such as free education and medical. Sponsoring a spouse, parent, or grandparent is a two-step process:

  • You must apply to become a sponsor.
  • Your spouse, partner, or grandparent must apply for permanent residence

Both the sponsorship and the permanent resident applications must be filed and sent together as a single package.

Eligibility Criteria for a Sponsor

  • You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Must be 18 years old.
  • Must provide basic financial requirements for your family for 3 years.
  • Live in Canada

Income Requirement for Canadian Family Sponsorship Program

The sponsor must fulfill the minimum necessary income or MNI according to their family size and provide Canada Revenue Agency-issued Notices of Assessment to prove they have met the requirements for the last 3 years.

While sponsoring a spouse, the candidates don’t need to demonstrate their MNI. Still, while supporting other family members in Mississauga, you must sign an undertaking regarding fulfilling their financial requirements based on the sponsorship category. Remember that you don’t have to meet MNI while sponsoring your dependent children.

Undertaking Submission

The sponsor must sign an undertaking which will be valid till the term of the undertaking terminates. If the sponsored persons take government social assistance, the sponsor must repay all the payments. The sponsor is compelled to fulfill all the requirements regardless of changes in circumstances such as separation, marital breakdown, divorce or financial trouble.

All the permanent residents get the benefits of healthcare provided under the provincial healthcare system. Still, the family members don’t have any private healthcare. In that case, the permanent resident or Canadian citizen will be responsible for providing the benefits not covered by the province, including dental care, prescription medications, and eye exams.
